Unilever Supports Super Carrier, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower

It was sometimes hard to hear, with F-18s landing and taking off the deck of the USS IKE. Only one deck below, on the hanger deck, you could feel the vibrations and noise from the engines and the hydraulic machines that launched and retrieved the jets on the open Atlantic Ocean.

The hanger deck was the focus of the venue for an exciting two day-event that provided entertainment and stress relief for the Sailors and Aviators of the IKE who were just completing a training phase for deployment later this year.

Unilever products were lined up on tables for the crew: AXE, Dove Men’s and Women’s products and Lipton Tea & Honey sticks were handed out by the ship’s MWR (Morale Welfare Recreation) personnel and eagerly “swallowed up” by the 5,000 men and women aboard ship.

Meanwhile, Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon, Inc. (AaSP), a national charity that began at Unilever’s headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, coordinated a tennis tournament provided by the US Tennis Assoc. and its partner Connor Sport Court, which provided the mobile court; a Madden Football Xbox 360 video competition supported by Microsoft Xbox and EA Sports; live music from the Brother Gravity country rock band; and a fitness competition put on by the folks at TRX Fitness, the company that makes mobile resistance exercise gear that AaSP sends to our Troops overseas.

The Washington Redskins Cheerleaders provided cheering for the video competition, a variety show for the crew and spent time with the sailors and aviators signing autographs and taking pictures the entire time. Other companies participating included Ten Gun Design, Leatherback and Sunrise Identity, all donating services for the event.

The event was a huge success and the crew got a welcome relief from the 18-20-hour training days. And Unilever was able to help lift the spirits of these brave men and women.
