The Borinqueneers

We are honored that @Vanessa Breg from Unilever shared her uncle, Efrain Gotay Ferrer’s, story with us.   Efrain, just 19 years old, was part of the 65th Infantry during the Korean War.  He was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Metal for his service.  Later in life, Efrain was an advocate and supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project.

Efrain passed away in November of 2013, and with the help of the Veteran’s Association, Vanessa was able to give him a military funeral.  As she was looking for his discharge papers to validate Efrain’s time in the Army, she found one last charitable act her uncle had been unable to complete.

“When I entered the house, I found a money order next to his typewriter and it was made payable to the Wounded Warrior Project.  It was probably one of the last things that he did before he died.  As a gesture of respect, I mailed the check to them with a note – letting them know that he had passed and how much his Military brothers and sisters meant to him."

Vanessa found out about his regiment’s Congressional Gold Medal a few weeks ago, and is very proud of the recognition her uncle and fellow Borinqueneers received.  Her only regret is that he passed just a few months before the medal was awarded.
