Smarter Eating 101: Fitting Desserts Into Your Diet

Just because it's sweet, doesn't mean you have to say no!

Yes! Dessert can be a fun and tasty part of a balanced diet. These tips will help you indulge wisely:

EAT TREATS IN MODERATION

Reserve truly indulgent desserts for special occasions. To satisfy an everyday sweet tooth, choose a piece of fruit as a treat. If you want something a little sweeter, bake apples with a touch of cinnamon, or make a berry parfait with low-fat yogurt.

MAKE A “BETTER FOR YOU” DECISION

Frozen treats are often too high in calories, fat and sugar. But there are a variety of tasty “better-for-you” options available.  In general, light, low-fat and fat-free ice cream and frozen yogurt have fewer calories and less fat than regular ice cream does. Try Breyers® Fat Free and Breyers® No Sugar Added varieties or Klondike® No Sugar Added bars.

PRACTICE PORTION CONTROL

Never gobble dessert straight from its original package. If you choose ice cream, scoop it into a bowl; do not eat it out of the carton! This way you will be more mindful of how much you have actually eaten. A pre-portioned treat, such as a Fruttare™ Fruit Bar or a Popsicle®, can also help keep your self-control in check.

ENJOY THE MOMENT

Turn off the TV, put down your cell phone, relax and focus on enjoying your treat. Eat slowly and savor each mouthful. Why rush a good thing?
