Makeup Trends to Brighten Your Winter Look

It may be freezing out, but you can warm things up for day or evening with these makeup tips.

Here’s how to get the most out of the season’s freshest looks, along with some makeup application and removal tricks to show you at your best.

Ravishing Reds.

For daytime or evening, red lips are a must. Today’s red lipsticks are more moisturizing and easier to use than those dry, matte lipsticks of decades past. “Go for a classic red lip if you have a warm complexion and dark hair and eyes,” suggests Susie Galvez, beauty expert and author of The Thrifty Girl’s Guide to Glamour. Women with a light skin tone should choose a red with more blue in it. And tomato-red lipsticks work best for redheads.

Not ready to commit to drop-dead red? “There are pinkish reds that are softer if you’re feeling timid,” says Galvez. “Or you can always go with a red lip stain.” For an even more demure look, apply a bit of lip gloss over your red lipstick to soften the color.

TIP! To make your lipstick last through the evening — even while eating and drinking — dab loose powder on your lips with a powder brush before applying lipstick.

Embrace blush.

“Blush is back!” says Galvez. “It can give you a fresh look that makes it seem like you’ve just been outside in the winter.” If you get carried away and apply too much, you don’t need to start all over; just take a Q-tips® cotton swab and do more blending, Galvez suggests.

Use neutral eye shadow and eyeliner to balance brighter lips and cheeks. “Unless you’re vamping it up for a big night out, you’ll want to stick with neutrals: gray, soft green, beige and even plum, which can be very soft for daytime or deeper for evening,” advises Galvez.

For daytime line your eyes with a soft color such as sable brown. At night go for a darker liner. To complete that sexy evening look, nothing beats a generous application of mascara, Galvez adds. “When the lights are dim, you want your face to show up!”

TIP! At the end of the night, Pond’s® Cold Cream wipes away eye makeup — even waterproof mascara — and provides needed moisturizing for the delicate under-eye area.
